Very occasionally, in the art world, one is privileged to witness history in the making, to be part of landmark event in an artist's career. There is no doubt amongst critics and collectors alike, that Alexander Millar's museum exhibition 'Working Man', is one of those moments. An invitation to exhibit in a museum is a rare and pretigious accolade, this recognition of Millar's unique talent by the Great North Museum: Hancock and the flattering comparisons to L.S. Lowry from the London Evening Standard and The Times respectively, only confirms what we have always known about Alexander Millar, that he is an artist of international calibre, possessing a depth of expression unrivalled in the contemporary art world. This major new exhibition of never-before-seen original paintings by Alexander Millar, goes on display in the Great North Museum: Hancock, in the heart of Newcastle, the city that inspires so much of his work. Alexander Millar’s 'Working Man' collection is inspired by the steel workers, ship workers and miners of Newcastle and the North-East, celebrating the people of a bygone era who are associated so intimately with the virtues and morals of the region.
Led by the Great North Museum: Hancock and supported by Washington Green Fine Art, a Learning and Education Programme will run in conjunction with the exhibition, featuring a number of activities which will all be free of charge to children, and families. From painting lessons with Alexander Millar to interactive play aimed at conveying the role of the working man and woman in shaping the history of Newcastle.
